Cornelius chuckled slightly upon seeing his squire blushing a new shade of red he had yet to see. He managed to tune out the two for a brief moment to listen around. Sire Hire was always lecturing someone for one reason or another. He did have an extensive knowledge on multiple subjects, unfortunately it went over the heads of most squires, and admittedly some knights. He managed to hear the end of the conversation between the two lovebirds beside him.

He looked back at Kelly and smiled a bit. “Kelly? A princess...? Well I suppose crazier things have happened.” He said before glancing at Adelaide, the squire to be. He turned to face Kelly again. “I'm certain we’ll find him soon enough.” He said before hearing someone being scolded in a training area closeby. “Speak of the devil…” he murmured softly before approaching the voice.

“Sire, I just don't understand...I had heard that if you wielded high quality weapons and armor, you'd be a truly devastating force to be reckoned with. But yet you still wield a sword with more knicks and chips, than I can count on both hands.” A squire said, unable to comprehend the situation. He seemed to have been knocked down onto the dirt, coating his shining equipment. His knight towering over him, holding said worn sword in his dominate hand. His eyes were on the border between blue and steel gray; his hair dark as chestnuts, and clearly someone who was a force to be reckoned with, fancy armor or not.

“Whoever told you that nonsense needs a swift kick in the pants. I allowed you to put on that flashy armor, while I wore simple leather armor to prove a point. My knight passed this knowledge onto me when I was a squire to live by. ‘A sword is not strength, a sword is not skill, a sword is not fellowship.’” He stated. “No doubt do you not understand that, so I'll use an example. A sword made of diamonds is useless in the arms of a child, but a wooden sword in the arms of a knight could bring down anyone in their way.” He finished. Cornelius had to agree; this wasn't the first time he had heard those three verses. A weapon itself didn't define the strength of the person wielding it, nor did show their skill in combat, and a sword could never feel the passion a human felt in the heat of combat.

Kelly had fallen silent after a few moments, and changed positions to play the squire march behind Cornelius. Adelaide stayed just slightly behind, yet to the side of Cornelius; not knowing as a prospective squire she should be even with Kelly.

"My. I haven't heard those verses before. What do they mean?" She asked, slightly louder than she should have.

Kelly groaned and facepalmed. "Uhh... Fall back. And umm... Non-royalty voice? Oh, I do hope Sir Hire is in a fair mood..."

Adelaide turned to give Kelly a bewildered look, not realizing she was actually trying to save the princess, temporarily stripped of that honor, further embarrassment. "Are not squires allowed to address a knight so? Honestly, it's only a question, Kelly."

"Erm... Not. The. Point. Not. Like. That." Kelly whimpered, biting her lower lip, removing her hat, and not making eye contact with Sir Kelson, and sheepishly at Adelaide. Looked like the princess was just going to have to learn the hard way, before being asked to change into squire clothing.

It seemed Sire Kelson heard the voice of the princess and turned around to see the three eavesdroppers. The fallen squire quickly got up and followed the knight towards the three. "Your majesty..." Sire Hire greeted as he knelt down, followed by the squire.

Cornelius smirked a bit at the gesture. "We've a letter to deliver to you Kelson, straight from the king himself." Cornelius said as he unfolded the paper and handed it to the kneeling knight. The knight read over the letter before standing. "I see...so the princess is to be my squire until the king feels she no longer needs to be." He summarized. "She is also not to receive any special treatment because she is a princess." He noted before glancing towards the princess with his steely gaze. "Understood..."

"He also had strict orders for myself upon breakfast." Kelly added submissively. "As something happened during training, which unfortunately put it on hold until after breakfast." She took a glance towards her own Sire, twisting her cloth hat as if wringing it out after washing. "I am to follow whichever knight has the announcement duty this morning, as Squire Elizabeth wasn't sure who that was." She wanted to add it wasn't fair to her as guard in training not to be told, but knew her not knowing and having to investigate WAS part of her training.

Adelaide nodded, before stating the obvious. "I know not for certain, but the reverse or second page will state with whom I room." She glanced at Kelly, knowing what the rules were to become betrothed. "I look forward to learning to be a warrior from one of Erion's finest knights." She was continuing to look her Sire in the eye, not knowing a squire had to earn that privilege (and usually did through hard work on the first day).

Cornelius noticed Kelly’s uneasy body language and offered a comforting smile, assuring her that everything was fine and to finish relaying the instructions given to her. Sire Hire listening to her as he eyed the trio. Once she finished, he nodded slightly before Adelaide spoke. Sire Hire turned over the paper after he glanced at it once more and looked back at the group. “It appears that there are plenty of coincidences among us." He said. “It seems that I'm in charge of announcement duty, and that you are the squire the Prin-...Adelaide will be sharing your rooming quarters.” He revealed.

Cornelius couldn't help but find it amusing that everyone they were searching for was right here. Sire Hire noticed the newly appointed squire was making eye contact with him. He knew she was rather oblivious to anything not having to do with her royal duties, so he would have to inform her. “Squire in training Adelaide. I feel I should tell you that while I will be training you to the best of my ability, you will have to start as every other squire does. If you wish to make eye contact with me, you must earn that privilege. You will do as I say without question and without hesitation. And when your father believes you no longer need to be taught by me, you will be a different woman than you are now.” He stated.

Adelaide lowered her gaze almost immediately. "Oh." She managed, before looking up again. "Without question... Sire."

Kelly looked like she took her first breath in about five minutes, exhaling a sigh of relief a little louder than intended. "Very well, Sire Kelson... I shall follow your announcements with what the king so ordered me to mention."

Adelaide blinked slightly dumbfounded at Kelly. Why did Kelly state it as if she was asking permission? She looked askance to either knight while clearing her throat, saying musically, "Shall we off to breakfast? Or do I change first? I probably have to change first? May I see my quarters for the next fortnight?"

Kelly nodded. "A grand idea, but we must ask to be excused. Follow my lead." She turned to Cornelius, and although had long since earned the privilege, looked up, while her head was lowered, so as not to meet his eyes. "Sire, if it pleases thee, may I be excused to see to the matter of helping the new squire?"

Adelaide followed suit, just as sheepishly, "Sire if it pleases thee, Uh... May I be excused to... Erm... Prepare, I guess?"

Well... At least Adelaide asked permission... Although awkwardly.

“Splendid. Now that that has been established, I will expect to see you at the dining hall before my announcements.” her Sire said before turning to face Kelly. “I trust that you will explain this situation to the best of your ability. It's not everyday the king entrusts a squire to deliver a message like this.” He said.

Sire Hire didn't seem too amused by all the questions his squire was asking at once. She was so...jittery. Training her would certainly be not only a test of his skill, but his patience as well. Before he could scold her for wasting valuable time, Kelly spoke.

Cornelius watched as Kelly began to demonstrate the proper way to ask permission and smiled a bit. He remembered the first time she had to ask permission. She was just as nervous as Adelaide was, but grew comfortable with him after earning the privilege of making eye contact. He cleared his throat and stood straight and spoke when she was done. “Very well. Be sure she is up to squire standards and arrives at the dining hall as soon as you can.” He said and nodded once.

After Adelaide had somewhat asked for permission, Sire Hire stood straight and spoke. “We will work on how you speak to your superiors later. Go with Sir Cornelius’ squire and return immediately. Should you arrive late, and your first day of training will not be easy. Sir Cornelius and I have matters to discuss and will be there once we've finished.” He said and nodded once before turning and walking away, expecting Cornelius to follow. “Off with you as well. Report to the dining hall.” Sire Hire said to Hire to the other squire who saluted and quickly ran off. Cornelius looked at the two females once more. “I'll be sure to stall Sire Hire.” He said softly with with a faint smile and turned and walked off.

Kelly nodded and saluted, before beckoning with a wave of her hand. "You've got speed, Adelaide. I... Erm... I've been a victim of it a few times. We have precisely twelve minutes." She took off at a good clip which Adelaide easily kept pace.

Elizabeth was outside the dining room, guarding the door like a hawk. The first on scene was the other squire Hire had been training. "Slow down." Her gruff order was like that of some futuristic school hall monitor. She saluted each knight that came through, one hand on her scabbard, as a proper guard.

"Stop pulling on the tunic!" Kelly was saying as she approached with Adelaide, now dressed similar to herself and the other squires.

"But it itches!" Adelaide whined, pulling and scratching.

"It's wool. It's supposed to. We don't get leather until we earn our feather. We don't earn our feather until our first 24 hour straight training session."

    "How long before that?"

"At the end of the 14 days. Mine kept getting postponed due to some problem or other. That's why mine is now at the beginning of my fourth week. It should have been beginning of my 13th day through beginning of my 14th."

"My birthday festival... Which I practically ordered you to attend each day." Adelaide nodded. Then she blushed bright as a cherry. "Oh. Oops?"

Kelly couldn't hide her amusement, despite it being the princess' fault she hadn't gotten her feather yet.

"Squire Woolworth. Squire... Eerm..." Elizabeth was never told the kings last name and it was rude for a guard squire to announce a presence of anyone by first name. Adelaide whispered it and Kelly's eyes bugged out.

"Egads." Elizabeth managed. "Very well..." Louder she proclaimed the shocking last name. No wonder the kingdom was named thusly. "And... Squire... Erion."

The dining room was rife with loud gasps, and Veritas... The only one that had a stranger one, practically Elfin (Sundancer), seemed to be the only squire not shocked by the name.

Kelly took her seat near the front, since she had announcements after Sir Hire knightly ones, and pointed Adelaide to the table to the side of her that she was normally at in the morning. They had taken eleven of those twelve minutes... Seven of them with Adelaide fussing about the clothes. This was going to be a looonnngg fortnight.

(Veritas is an NPC, but a little bit of information about her will be fed from time to time)

Cornelius and Sire Hire turned around once the two females left to do their assigned tasks. The two knights walked in the opposite direction before Sire Hire spoke. “So tell me Sir Cornelius; what exactly should occurred last night.” He said, skipping straight to the point. “I want to hear it from your perspective.” He requested.

“Very well.” Cornelius replied and crossed his arms and racked his brain for as much detail as he could provide. “Squire Kelly and I had been training late last night, improving her stamina and endurance by having her run laps by my side while carrying weights. And while I was circling the other side of the courtyard, I heard some commotion and saw Squire Kelly engaged in combat with a young squire from another kingdom. Once I joined them, Melvin appeared-" He said before getting cut off.

“Melvin? What business could he possibly have here? He knows he's not permitted to return after what he had done.” Sire Hire said, making Cornelius now.

“I'm well aware of that, and I can only assume he wished to try it again.” The blonde knight replied. His companion crossed his arms and nodded slightly as he seemed lost in thought.

“And you thought not to arrest him for his crimes?” Sire Hire finally spoke. Cornelius wasn't sure what to say. He supposed he had been too focused on his squire and the princess’ safety to think he should have arrested the two for trespassing and ended any possible conflict in the future. The only crime his new squire could be accountable for would be attacking Kelly.

"And I assume you didn't force your squire to return to her training?" Sire Hire added. Cornelius shook his head.

" The king would have needed to account on this matter since she was there when they first arrived." He responded.

"What about after the message was give to her?" Hire asked, seeming to not be pleased with Cornelius' teachings.

"There'd have been no time. We were searching for you afterall." He defended.

(Alright then, I'm looking forward to it then)

Breakfast was just starting to be served as per custom, because that way all those with announcements had a captive audience. One did not leave their seat until everyone was finished eating. At least that was something Adelaide was well acquainted, since she almost always had been dining with the squires during lunch. It would figure to be every meal.

Elizabeth had gotten the information she had needed, but in a rare blunder she was sure to hear about from her knight sire Gregor Winthrop, as well as during her spar date with said knight, announced, "Hear ye, hear ye! To-day's announcements presented by Sir Kelton, followed by words from His Majesty through the voice of Square Woolworth!" Elizabeth did not catch her mispronunciation of the last name, or incorrect saying of 'Squire', and was glaring at the chuckles and snickers scattered throughout the dining hall. As with every time Elizabeth made a rare blunder.... It was always a twofold doozy.

“Well? Don't keep me waiting Cornelius. I expect an answer.” Sire Hire said, clearly impatient. “Your answer better be good or-" He began to threaten before Cornelius interrupted.

“We allowed them to escape. They believed they heard another knight approach and-" Cornelius began before Sire Hire grabbed him by his chest plate and growled.

“You ALLOWED them to escape?!” He snapped. “Imbecile! Should he return again, who is to say he would not be successful in assassinating the princess, or even the king himself. You've got some nerve letting them escape with paying for their crimes. I ought to report this to the king-" He growled before Cornelius grabbed his wrists and removed them from his chest plate forcefully.

“My squire and I reported this to the king and said NOTHING on this matter. What's done is done and I would appreciate if you didn't speak to me in this manner. I don't condone violence between knights, but I will tell you this Kelson. Should you threaten me again or even my squire, I will be sure that you will retire early.” He retaliated. The two stood there glaring daggers at one another, the tension maybe even too thick for a knife to cut through. Both waiting for the other to speak.

“Bah…” Sire Hire said and removed Cornelius’ hands from his wrist. “Don't waste anymore of my time. I must report to the dining hall.” He said as he turned away and began to walk away, clenching his fists angrily, Cornelius following behind at a distance.

Eventually they arrived at the dining hall just as Sire Hire was announced. He stood by where the squire who announced him was. "It's good to see everyone here this morning. It's one thing to not be disappointed in." He said, shooting a quick glance at Cornelius who simply looked away. "As you all know, some of your knights have not been present lately. They've been raiding nearby villages that have been opposed to us. As expected, they have succeeded and are currently on route back to the kingdom. Keep in mind that your behaviors have been monitored and will be reported to your knights. May the gods have mercy on you." He said. "Turn your attention to squire Woolworth. This information will be important and will affect each and every one of you." He stated before stepping aside.

Kelly gave a polite "Ta," and nod to Sir Hire as she took her place at the front and cleared her throat. With a resolve seldom seen, she began, "To-day was supposed to be my nonstop training, unfortunately it was halted one hour in when two foes showed up. Knight and squire from a neighboring kingdom." She then went into a detailed discription of the one she had seen well. She looked to Sir Hire for help describing Sir Melvin, however, as he had been more shaded.

One of the squires interrupted the announcement, but for good cause. "That squire you described. I saw him about three days prior midday as I bid farewell to my knight sire!"

Veritas remained silent as Kelly thanked the squire and Elizabeth confronted him harshly about not bringing that to someone's attention sooner. Kelly finished her announcement with the following solemn statement. "The king's order is to shoot on sight for us archers, and slice on sight for you sword wielders. He has zero tolerance for either one since the intention of their trespass was assassination. Thank you for your attention of this matter."

Veritas was one of the very few squires, and only female, to be adept at both. She promised to use whichever weapon she had at that moment at hand.

After Sire Hire had made his announcement, he stood in place and watched over the other knights and Squires. His focus seemed to be on Cornelius however...He wasn't one for keeping grudges, but he couldn't help but feel a bit of spite for the blonde knight. Said knight was watching his squire speak and encouraged her from where he stood. Of course, there is was still tension between he and Sire Hire. They were one dirty look away from potentially starting a brawl in front of everyone.

Sire Cornelius snapped out of his agitated staring contest with Sire Hire and looked at the squire who spoke up. He was stunned. Oswald had been here before? Did that mean that he had been sent here to get a layout of the kingdom again and report back to Melvin that a majority of the knights would be leaving? Either way...the news that Oswald had been here, and that a squire had known was news to him.

Sire Hire growled at the squire and also proceeded to chew him out with Elizabeth. “And you didn't see it fit to report this?! Should you have reported this at the time, we would have been on a higher alert and we wouldn't be discussing the events of last night!” He snapped, and as expected, glanced at Cornelius. He would have continued to speak after Kelly had announced that everyone was expected to kill on sight of anyone they deemed suspicious, but a glare from Cornelius made him grumble under his breath. Kelly had relayed the message as requested, there was no need to add onto it.

With the description of both wanted me engraved into their memories, the squires were then dismissed from the mess hall and went off to do their tasks for the day, whether it was training, recon, or...stable duty. Sire Cornelius approached his squire, avoiding gazing at Sire Hire.

Kelly was looking at her still bare hat. With breakfast over, the king had ordered her sire to finish the 24 hours straight for her to earn her feather. Not knowing this, she glanced at Elizabeth, and especially her double feathered headwear. "Has fate deemed me unworthy of my feather? How can I hope to make archer knight?"

Meanwhile, as Elizabeth took a deep breath, and prepared for a menial food guard training exercise, she thought of how she had corrected Sir Hire. "A moment, good knight." Elizabeth said to Kelson, approaching him. "I stand by what I said day before yesterday, but humbly request pardon for how. I shall still spar to-day as required by your honor, and to show my sincerity of this apology, request the disadvantage of wooden sword again steel." She bowed, hat off, head down, eyes focused on the floor between their feet, waiting on approval or denial of her request before she could straighten up and begin her messhall duty that would take to lunch.

Adelaide tilted her head to one side. Top dog of the pound was humbling herself before Adelaide's Sire. "Is this something else I must learn as a squire? What is she doing?!"

Cornelius had joined the little group and looked down at Kelly and saw how filled with despair she was to be one of the few squires without a feather yet. The knight placed a hand on her shoulder. “Ah young squire...Tis only a feather. If it were up to me, I would bestow the whole bird to you. But I suppose you would look silly with a bird on your head.” He joked, making Sire Hire scowl. “Worry not, we'll continue your training straightaway.” He assured. “You'll not be without feather for much longer.” He promised.

Sire Hire looked down at Elizabeth and crossed his arms. She had followed the proper procedure to address him as any squire should speak to a knight. But Cornelius and his squire...didn't follow these procedures with one another. They were far too casual with one another. And he despised that about them...They needed to be professional. He listened to her request and pondered on it. “...Very well. Should you show your true skill in combat, then I shall pardon your actions from then.” He accepted.

Cornelius would answer Adelaide’s question. “Should a squire speak out of line, or show some form of disrespect to their knight, it's custom to seek forgiveness, even if the squire did not believe what they did was wrong.”

The casualness of uncle/niece wasn't lost on Adelaide either. "So that's what father meant. Which means even discipline is far different." She said as if a candle had lighted itself right over her head.

Elizabeth arose, bowed in gratitude, answering, "As his sire so wishes." She placed her hat on her head and was about to leave when Adelaide's words stopped her in her tracks. She glared at the shamed princess. "What say you Squire Erion?!"

Adelaide gulped. "Several knights with squires are allowed to discipline as a familial guardian. By order of the king. Uncle. Father. Usually the most of it. I remember father distinctly saying that Sir Cornelius is to assume the role of uncle. Just as while under his tutelage, as I am currently stripped of my rank, Sir Hire is my... Ah... New father."

Elizabeth nodded. "I'm actually adopted by mine. Sir Gregor pulls no favoritism with me as daughter and squire. He actually expects more of me as a squire because I'm his adopted daughter. While on duty, I may admit I'm his daughter as well... However, whilst on duty, I'm forbidden to call him anything except Sir Gregor, or a slap I receive for not knowing my place. In fact, he caught wind of the disrespect of Sir Hire, and now I must face him on the sparring field first. I must beg my leave now." She quickly hastened to her duties.

Adelaide gazed up to Hire Kelson. "Uncles have the right to kid around, yet make their nieces work much harder than others. She is also always in danger of the belt for foolishness."

Kelly was behind Cornelius to head up the next 23 hours to earn the elusive feather. "Do we return, therefore, to that which was stopped by the foe? The ten laps around the courtyard? Or do we move to another task?" Kelly was trying to sound like a squire, but that niece like quality had crept out in the question.

Cornelius looked down at the former princess and smiled a bit. It seemed that the King spoke of the knight and squire enough for Adelaide to know what he meant in terms of the different kinds of discipline between a knight and squire.

He watched with a subtle expression of amusement to see Elizabeth go from a rather apologetic behavior, to once again looking down upon another squire. The two sides of the same coin.

He was impressed by Adelaide's knowledge however. It seemed the princess was more than just a pretty face. Not many princesses bothered retaining any real knowledge, when they could have others answer questions for them, leaving them to only smile and wave. The poor dear had to assume the new role of Sir Hire's daughter. Never having married and conceived a child of his own, this would certainly be interesting, to say the least.

Sir Gregor was a good man. And while officially taking the role of father to his squire, Cornelius had seen behavior that bordered the father/uncle category. He supposed that Sir Gregor was a healthy mix between Cornelius and Kelson. Strict, but knows when to tone down the attitude.

It was true that uncles had the right to kid around. Cornelius supposed that might have been the reason he chose that position...but perhaps it was also because he didn't see himself fit to be a father figure to Kelly.

The blond knight turned back to his squire and smiled a bit before turning his body to face her. "Tell me young squire. What would you tell your squire, should you be put in this situation?" He asked. This was certainly something no knight had asked a squire before. Knights focused on what they would do, or what their knight had made them do to earn their feather when they were once squires. But to ask a squire themself what they would do now? Unheard of.

Kelly gulped and got a wide-eyed look on her face. The only reason she had asked away from Kelson (she didn't know how he'd react, but it most likely wouldn't be favorable) and Elizabeth (who would bark at her about her manners), was because she actually feared looking really stupid in front of them... And the consequences therewith due her. To have it given back to her could only mean he would trust her judgement. It also meant they were already back at it as intelligence, wisdom and discernment in the face of adversity was part of the 24 hour test. They already were back on the clock. The real question would be how prepared was she? "I'm a bit muddled," she admitted slowly, "as now that I know for certain this is about getting my feather and would've involved at some point a mock attack to ascertain my abilities... I'm afraid I cannot answer without knowing... Did the real attack count as my test, which to hear you explain the king's judgement... I passed. If that be so, good knight, than a retest as it was originally planned, ten laps in an hour, would be the most logical course as it was interrupted, by nearly 20 minutes was spent on the standoff with the foes. It wasn't until I pointed out the arrow and you chose then to have audience with the king that the clock would've been stopped on the 24 hour straight test of endurance." Yes, she studied the books (which would come in later on the writing portion to be done at a time when she would near be ready to pass out from exhaustion).

Adelaide looked towards Kelson without looking directly in his eyes. She learned that real quick by how she was reprimanded by him, shown tough love by Kelly, and barked at by Elizabeth. "What is my first task as your squire, Sire?" She still needed to learn about indoor voices... That almost sounded like a royal order.

Veritas fussed with making arrows which had been her task while her own sire had been on the raid. The task was too easy for a wood elf such as she, and the quota of 250 long met... And doubled. Did she need to make more? Every archer (not counting squires) would have ten a piece. She glared at Adelaide with a scowl that would peel bark. "I'll go await my knight sire..." She said almost gravelly, she was so upset with the loudmouthed princess, before exiting.
